I think, no I know my house got messier since last weekend. That's becasue I did nothing chore-wise at all this week.
Being the first week back at work/school I came home completely exhausted & passed out on the couch 4/5 evenings this week. I did get one thing accomplished, my car got an oil change & washed, though even though they did a good job I'm still finding nooks & crannies they missed that are horribly dusty & crusty, I don't think they even vaccummed under the floor mats, sigh, disappointing.
The oil change didn't even kick of the electronic notifier that goes off when I need an oil change, I don't even know how to turn it off. So I'm thinking I'll start going back to my old place for oil changes & now I need to find a new car detail place that's a little bit more "detail" oriented.
Itried, but the people on the other end failed, so onto the next. I called a lawn care/maintenance company to come mow my yard & god bless 'em cuz this is the best my lawn has looked ever since I bought the house a year ago. Mind you I've had three others try & cut my grass all to dismal results, the lawn looked choppy or too short, etc. These guys, funny too, their name is The Guys With Green Shoes, their nursery business: The Guys With Green Thumbs, hehe. Anywho, lawn looks great even with the brown/half dead grass.
So today I woke up 9am, pretty good, but I've just spent the last hour online & typing this post up as we speak. I need to get in gear so that I can actually get started on those elusively "complicated" resolutions I made last weekend. My goal today is to at least get the house picked up, not necessarily dusted & everything, just get everything picked up & out of the way so that I can actually dust & vaccum properly.
Wish me luck as I head into the abyss of my inner sanctum.

Resolutions, Shmesolutions!
I've been wanting to put together a New Year's Resolution list for the past few days now. But the one thing that's stopping me has been the fact that I've never kept a resolution before. I can go on as to why this is, but let's face I'm a procrastinator & underacheiver in certain instances. I'm better under pressure for deadlines & goals.
Weight loss resolutions, artistic resolutions, organizational resolutions, etc. etc. etc. etc. No follow through whatsoever. Obviously I needed some sort of self-accountability, progress monitoring of my goals & evaluation. Good lord I'm using professional lingo here, sigh....it never stops. Anywho, so I'm gonna put out my resolution list into the interworld, that way I'll have something not only on record, but a little accountability & self-monitoring, since I'm such a social media "whore."
Okay, here goes:
1. Get my house in order. Meaning clear out the clutter & straighten up what's left.
2. Maintain my house. Meaning keep it in order; Stay on top of laundry, dishes, dusting, vacuuming & mopping! And lawd help me, the yard!
3. Paint interior of house: parlor, kitchen, dining room & living room (most likely will be done in the summer).
4. Take up some sort of physical activity whether it's dancing, yoga, jazzercise, something.
5. Try to become more optimistic. With my new position this year I've lost some of my optimism & positivity.
6. Exercise my creativity more. I heard about this painting class from my sister in New Orleans & they have a sister franchise in North Austin called Painting With A Twist. I'm gonna try this.
7. Become more financially responsible. Meaning I need to monitor my finances better than ever before. I used to just look at my balance when necessary, no longer.
8. Stay on top of my lesson plans, don't wait until late Sunday night to finish them.
9. Turn off the TV more often.
10. Get out the house more, even it's just my backyard swing.
I'll even go as far as posting videos of my progress, to make sure I stay on top of things. Kind of a before/during/after. I'll get on the "before" video as soon as the batteries charge up, gotta love those rechargable batteries.
For S&Gs I'd like to use some of the resolutions I found in January's Marie Claire. Though I'm not gonna lie, they are some pretty good ones. They're more to enhance the soul type of resolutions as opposed to those most would deem "practical."
"1. Don't let a week go by without telling someone that you love them. Out loud. Pets count. So does your reflection in the mirror.
2. You know those days when no one's around and you download that song that always makes you dance, and then you kill five minutes completely rocking it in your house? Make lots of days one of those days.
3. Buy a 'good decision' piggy bank. Pay yourself a dollar every time you skip the third drink, go to bed early or make a difficult phone call. At the end of the year, buy a 'good decision' present.
4. At some point this month sit down, take out a piece of paper and write down five reasons you would want to marry yourself."
There were more, but some I couldn't put out in public or I didn't feel connected to them. Okay people, I'm off to get started & make an attack plan as to how I'm going to actually do this, sigh...but since I have one day of vacay left, I'm going to enjoy it thoroughly! Til next time.

You Can Never Go Back
I'm at the tail end of my trip back home for the holidays. Let's face it, moving into a classroom was way harder than I expected. I was really looking forward to going home for the holidays this year. Seeing as I cried like a baby when I had to fly back after my parents' 50th Anniversary. Each day is a day closer to the summer & recuperation from this year. Anywho, Christmas trip. As usual I brought the canine kids. Mom talked me into driving back into Texas to spend a night with one of our cousins in Buna, which let's face it is always a fun trip & there is forever good food at Lorraine's house. It did kind of take a day half of relaxing out of the the trip I had planned for, but it made Mom happy, so all is well.
Came home Christmas Eve & Mom made turkey, dressing & rice & gravy, yummy! I teased all the siblings I could contact, you know the country cell phone service isn't all that great. The youngest brother, John & his wife Jeannie, came in town that night, we all hung out for awhile & then headed to beddy bye. Day after Christmas we went visiting my aunt & uncle, Mom wanted to drop off some of her oyster dressing, which everyone says is heaven, but I haven't been able to partake all these years so you'll just have to trust everyone else who's eaten it.
After the visit we went back & ate leftovers for lunch, yummy! Oh yeah did I mention my nephew's girlfriend had their baby, a little girl, Kailyn. Probably won't get to see her until my niece's wedding next October. Wow! Both my niece & nephew have kids & she's getting married, I feel sooooo old!
Well I loaded the car after lunch & made my way to The Big Easy, New Orleans, I've been feeling especially homesick lately & just jonesing for a NOLA fix. I made a pit stop in Baton Rouge to visit with one of my great friends JT whom I figured out I hadn't seen in about 3 years, last time was Feb 2006, crazy! Got to NOLA & called my BF Evah, Shannon, luckliy she was already in New Orleans, but I knew that.
We were starving, so she came over & we headed out to the Metry location of Acme Oyster House on Vets. Shrimp Po'boys, Corn & Crab Bisque & Red Beans & Rice, yummy! Shannon had a hankering for beignets, we could've just driven up the road to Cafe Du Monde on Vets, but since neither of us had been to the Quarter in awhile we took a little road trip ;)
Pulled into a prime parking spot on the river near the riverboat Natchez. Walked thru Jackson Square past all the tarot card readers & sidewalk artists to Bourbon St. Shannon & I realized how much we had taken the city for granted when we lived there. She was looking for some black & white pictures of the city scape and we realized we could've taken those ourselves ages ago. The things we could've done with PhotoShop too. Ah well.
Once we got to Bourbon I took Shannon to Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, she had never been. We sat & enjoyed the eye candy bartenders then we made our way back down Bourbon, checked out the sites & proceeded to get our beignet fix. I got a headache around this time which lasted all through to Monday morning.
Needlesstosay I slept all day Sunday, which sucked cuz I really wanted to go t-shirt shopping at Fleurty Girl & Storyville :( I guess I'll have to settle for online shopping instead, sigh.... I did wind up visiting with an old college friend & cousins by way of marriage, lol. Spent 3 hours catching up with each other. She's married & has step kids, crazy!
Monday, Brenda & I decided to go to the movies. We had to pick up Michael from the airport, she had a contractor come by to finish up some work, but after that we went with Emily to see It;s Complicated. Same people who brought us Something's Gotta Give & The Holiday. Which actually the movie felt like a combo of those two, middle aged people in the throes of relationship issues with a great soundtrack, lol. Overall hysterical movie, but Alec Baldwin just was sleazy as that character. He made me like Steve Martin that much more.
We found ourselves at Lager's after for dinner, yummy cobb salad. Emily then left us again to hang out with her friends, did I mention I didn't see her til Monday morning & I was at her house for 3 days, lol. Sigh.......twenty somethings, I remember those days.
Brenda & I picked up Rudy from the airport late, his flight was delayed an hour. We brought his puppy who right now is the sweetest doggie in the family, DaDoo, sounds like (duhdoo!). We woke up late, drive back to Marksville in record time, Rudy found out my car does 100mph, ahhhhhh! Thankfully I slept most of the way, lol. Mom made meatballs & spaghetti, yummy! I'm sitting here with a full belly & a satisfied smile.
Good company, good trip, good visit, good food! Til next time!

Mild Halloween & Sore Throat
Well at least I didn't stay home & wallow this Halloween. Last year I stayed home & just watched tv, not fun. This year I ran into a girlfriend from work & she invited me to go on their hayride, even though it was mainly for the kiddos. I went home & dusted off the Pink Ladies jacket I got last year, but never got to wear. Let's face it I sat & watched the kids trick or treat. Though I think the cool weather didn't help the fact that I let my hair air dry earlier in the day. I woke up the past two days with a sore throat.
Thankfully I took some meds & I'm heading the up the recovery road pretty fast. Looking forward to the science teachers' conference with my coworkers.

My New York Trip Days 3, 4 & 5
After that last post I realized I'm long-winded, but hey isn't that the point of having your own personal forum!
Day 3
Okay, see I brought a pair of tennis shoes for the trip, but I should've known better. These shoes even at work hurt when I'm on my feet for prolonged hours, but I didn't want to chance hurt feet by wearing the same shoes the entire weekend. Well! Cue day 3 where we walked all over the Lower East Side. Well we started in Chinatown & Little Italy. Got bum rushed by ladies trying to sell Coach, Gucci, & Louis. I had a craving for Chinese food & we walked around until we saw a word we recognized on the signs, "restaurant." Lemme just say PF Chang's is way better, lol. Then we found ourselves walking thru Little Italy & Shannon made the comment that we should've eaten somewhere around there instead. Literally drooling over peoples linguine.
I can't remember if we caught the subway to Lower East Side or we walked, but that's how much the feetsies & legs were starting to ache. I began to feel how ambitious we actually were the day before. Of course, it's my summer vacay, I've been lazing around my house so far this summer, no physical activity to speak of. Big mistake, should've built up my resistance before doing a walking vacation in New York, hello!
We stopped at the Tenement Museum after walking god knows how many blocks. Looked over the tour listings, we got there too late & most of the ones we wanted were booked up, so we went & sat in the little film room where they were showing videos from the History Channel about immigrants in New York; made me want to go watch Gangs of New York, hehe. Here's where the leg/feet thing happened: I stood up after the movies & our morning "stroll" and good god, my lower legs began this burning thing that lasted pretty much all day long. I took my first step and I could already feel the raw skin at the bottom of my feet from the socks & shoes in my arches, very very very sad at this point.
I know we walked over to The Pickle Guys & they were closed!!!! I thought maybe I was just off a bit but there was not a lot of traffic, pedestrian or otherwise in this area on Saturday, which kind of threw me off a bit, but after coming home & reading my tour book, which got left at home btw, it said this area is hopping everyday but Saturday, go figure.
We then made our way to Katz's Deli, you know where Meg Ryan has her "scene," & the lady net to her says I'll have what she's having. We were able to walk thru, take pictures etc. They give a little ticket when you walk in which you have to turn into the cashier no matter whether you order something or not. A non-returned ticket can cost up to $50! We held onto to those tickets like our life depended on it. Shannon actually liked the place.
We then walked to the subway, did I mention walking again, caught it to NYU area. We walked to Washington Square, walked again. By this time my feet were burning & so were my legs. Really it hurt to walk, to move even. I should've massaged my legs the previous night when we got back, but wasn't even thinking. I didn't drink enuff water like I knew I probably should have. We got some snapples & sat down on a bench in the park. Listened to the numerous music acts vying for the attention of the college students, tourists & really any passerby. We watched a unabashed display of public affection that left both me & Shannon shuddering. Though I do have to say the dude was hot, in that skinny urban/european kind of way, ;)
We then headed off to try & find Magnolia Bakery & Chumley's, a speakeasy back during prohibition. Hello, why was it being renovated & why didn't I think to try it's other entrance?! Still haven't told Shannon that one yet, hehe. Anywho on our way out or the park who do we walk past but Mark Dacascos, you know, the chairman from Iron Chef America. Both of us were start struck! I immediately called Mom & Dad to tell them, I knew Mom would appreciate. Shannon said he's totally gay, but I just checked out IMDB & he's married with a kid.
So Chumley's was a bust, no pun intended, hehe. We made our way over to Magnolia Bakery & the line was outrageous. I couldn't do it. My feet & legs were screaming at me to rest. Shannon was a great hostess & took me home. Went home & ordered Italian take-out, it was freakin delicious, smooth tomato sauce & eggplant parmasean with spaghetti, yummy! We also watched The Muppets Take Manhattan & CenterStage, just cuz we were in a NY state of mind, hahaha.
Day 4
I learned, finally, wore the good comfy tennis shoes. Since you can park pretty much anywhere in the city on Sundays we drove a lot that day. First we got our spot on 39th & walked over to the Chicago theater, but rush tickets were gone, then we tried for Billy Elliot & people were just standing waiting in line for cancellations to mysteriously appear. So no other shows for this trip. We were hungry at this point & Shannon introduced me to Schnipper's, very good burger & good onion rings, yummy.
We got back in the car & made our way back to The Pickle Guys, we'd both been jonesing for pickles since we were denied the previous day. Got a parking spot that at the time that seemed perfect. Skipped up to the shop & inhaled the briny salty garlicy marinades of the store. The guy gave us a run down & we put in our orders. While I took a picture Shannon checked on the car to make sure it wasn't getting a ticket, but there was a truck in front of the car, a tow truck to be more specific. It didn't hit Shannon until I said it twice & then she ran down the street to rescue her car. Yep, she got a parking ticket, bogus if you ask either of us.
Now Magnolia Bakery was next. Shannon had warned me their recipe had changed from the first time she had tried them. Well, what she didn't tell me was that they baked cardboard. Good lord we each bought 2 cupcakes & they all tasted like cardboard with icing. The icing was good, but when eaten in conjunction with the cake part, it was awful. Seriously it was the worst cupcake I have ever eaten in my entire life. Lost $5.50 on crap cupcakes. I've made better, my nieces when they were 10 have made better than that.
With the cupcake debacle behind us we drove north. At least we had our pickles ;)
We drove around Manhattan & took pictures of a lot of the things on my tourista list. Faltiron Building, which we drove right behind & didn't even realize it! Of course we were driving around in SUnday New York traffic, hello, I was totally getting car sick, we had to stop at a pharmacy for some dramamine, where the cashier let me stand in what I thought was a checkout line only to be told later, & after a few other people got in the real line that there was just "one" line, grrrrr! We were trying to find Serendipity's & wound up on the west side when it was actually on the east side, oopsy :)
Got there put our name down, 45-60 min wait. What did we do to kill time: went to Dylan's candy store up the block. Went back to get our table, upstairs right next to the one John Cusack & Kate Beckinsale ate at in the movie. Our waiter was very sweet he took our pictures after we got the infamous Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, which tasted more like Frrrozen Chocolate Pudding. Delicious still the same.
I believe we went back home after that, but we could've stopped & took a couple more pictures, not too sure.
Day 5
Shannon had to go into work on Monday for a couple hours. We had decided the night before to do The Cloisters. Now one of the main things that I wanted to do on this trip was The Cloisters, it has the Unicorn Tapestry & The Annunciation by Campin, been dying to see that. Alas Shannon called me right before she left work & told me they were closed on Mondays. So I broke out the map and decided to do the Museum of TV & Radio. We got into the city ate @ this little diner like restaurant, reminded us of Tiffin Inn back home so I got a tuna salad sandwich & seasoned curly fries. All the waiters had white jackets & black pants, it was very cute.
We walked around & found totally by accident the 21 Club, the one with all the jockey statues along the gates. Right next door was the museum, now called The Paley Center & guess what it was closed on Mondays! WTH?! Then what you ask, we had no real back-up plan so we walked & came across Rockefeller Center. Decided to do the NBC Studio Tour. Right before we watch the intro film they tell us to turn off cell phones, cameras, etc. As we walk up to security to go through the metal detectors guess who walks by: Sam Talbot, the runner up from the 2nd season of Top Chef! Second celeb I saw on my trip & I have no proof of either one, grrrr!
As for the tour we got to see 3 studios, MSNBC, Sunday Night Football (under construction still) & the SNL studio, 8H. Shannon was thoroughly entertained, she doesn't even watch SNL, or has ever watched it, but she was a little star struck by it. It was pretty cool.
Shannon recommended John's Pizzeria for dinner, thin crust good toppings, delicious. Perfect last meal for my trip. Then Shannon was all about the ice cream, then again when is she not about the ice cream. So I broke out the iPhone again, urbanspoon was truly extremely helpful on this trip. We first were going to go to one place, but then got a better reviewed place right up the block. We walked out to see the addresses & were about to walk across the street to see if it was in the next block, but low & behold it was right next door, Cones. People if you ever go to NY go here, Argentinian gelato, need I say more? Yes, okay, omg best gelato I ever had. Shannon got coffee & another flavor, can't remember. I got banana & pistachio, omg, best freakin' ice cream product ever!!!!! Pizza & gelato, perfect ending to perfect trip.
Day 6
Loaded up the car, drove to the airport, cried at the drop-off, got on the plane & came home.

My New York Trip Days 1 & 2
Obviously the title says it all, gonna tell you all about my trip to New York.
DAY 1
I flew into the breezy LaGuardia Airport. I landed early & Shannon was thrown off her schedule, lol. She picked me up, we went to Target to get some essentials, then dropped everything off at her apartment. When deciding where to go to dinner when I'm on vacation I like to go someplace that I can't get at home, hello Chili's, Applebee's & Outback. Shannon had heard of this place on City Island in the Bronx: Sammy's FishBox. Seafood is always good on any coast, so Sammy's it was.
I was showing off my iPhone, which Shannon hates by the way, lol, she wanted me to get a blackberry, nah. I used google maps & we kind of got a a little turned around, but it worked out. We walked in before this huge family group did, thank goodness. Sat down & proceeded to look at the hugest restaurant menu I've ever seen. We both wound up ordering the same thing: jumbo shrimp. Shannon filled me in on her new job & all the drama that went on, that she never called me about, hello!
Went back home & chilled out a bit, showered & went to bed. Thankfully there was no need to get up early ;)
Day 2
I must say I didn't realize how ambitious we were until day 3, lol. Since we didn't have to wake up early we found ourselves rolling out about 10am. Our game plan for the day was to do Lower Manhattan: Financial District, Seaport & Pier 17, some Theater District & then The Little Mermaid that night. We parked in Queens, took the subway into the city. Well we got a little excited & just started walking around & taking pictures that we wound up eating lunch a bit later than planned, which is totally okay.
Thankfully all the stuff near Wall St is all so close to each other, I even saw a thing or two not on my tourista list, NY Stock Exchange for instance. We meant to go to the NMAI but somehow or another we missed it & didn't realize it until way later, lol. See totally out of it even on vacay.
Ate at Heartland BBQ @ South St. Seaport, I had brisket chili, pretty good, but I should've known better than to eat BBQ outside of Texas. Then we indulged in a little Hagen Daas(sp?) before walking thru Pier 17. Saw this little creature being demo'd at one of those mall-type kiosks called Mr. Fuzzy, people get your minds out of the gutter, it's actually pretty fascinating.
We went to get the car since you can park in the city after a certain time on the weekends. Drove back & parked at this awesome spot. I won't divulge that way it stays Shannon's secret. Then we partook of some of the things around the Theater District. Hit a lot of places on my list: The New Yorker, The Algonquin, The Brill Building. We ventured over to The Algonquin and we debated on whether or not to go inside. We were dressed in jeans & tennis shoes & this looks like a pretty swanky place. Didn't know exactly how we'd be perceived. Apparently not bad, we walked in & they seated us in the bar, the servers were great. Though can't say much for the suits sitting a few tables over from us. They were very rude to the waiter about a signed receipt, he totally went off on the guy, had to get a manager over & everything. Anywho Shannon & I ordered 2 of the most expensive drinks we've ever had, that would be $15 ea. I got a "Parker," figured it's be perfect since it used to be where Dorothy Parker hung out back in her heyday. It was pretty good, tart too, fitting for it's name.
We made our wau back to tourist central, I mean Times Square, and walked aorund a bit where we found The Brill Building, this was where Carole King & Neil Diamond had offices when they wrote some of the the most famous pop songs of the 50s, 60s & I think 70s. We came in through the delivery door & one guy was about to give us a hard time when the guard on duty said to chill, that we were just looking around. Gorgeous lobby by the way, all gold & shiny. Shannon tried her darndest to take a picture of me standing outside but the late in the day pedestrian traffic kind of put a kink in the plans. One guy, a cute blonde in a suit halted mid step to try & let us take it, but his fellow NYers did't take the hint.
We had a little more time to kill before The Little Mermaid began what did we do, got fries & drinks from McDonald's since we didn't want full on dinner til after the show. We made our over to the theater, took some pics outside and filed in with the rest of the patrons. Okay so I was getting into the music a bit, Shannon says I actually started to sing a bit and pointed my fingers, all probably true, but gimme some slack, it was my FIRST Broadway show, I was excited. Got to see Faith Evans as Ursula, pretty cool. The first half was okay. I must say I was kind of disappointed a bit. I was expecting so much more from a broadway show. But this actually looked like something I'd see down here. Even CATS in Dallas was better, as far as sets go. The second half made up for the first, but still it left me wanting more. We had originally planned to go see Billy Elliot, but we waited too long to get tickets. Then that whole Tony thing happened & there was no way we were getting tickets for it then.
I had wanted to eat dinner at Sardi's, the restaurant from The Muppets Take Manhattan where they have all the caricatures of celebrities on the walls. Didn't know if Shannon would go for the prices though. I casually brought it up as we passed by on the way back to the car. Again didn't know if we'd be accepted in our jeans & tennis shoes. that & nobody was in there. Since our show was a "kiddie" show it let out early. We walked in & they seated us right away. Saw the booth where Kermit sat, hehe. We decided on appetizer/entrees & dessert. Lemme just say that was the best freakin creme brulee I've ever had, oh good gawd! Even better than Commander's Palace in New Orleans & that was damn good. This one had creamy custard, very rich, you could see the vanilla bean seeds at the bottom of the dish. The sugar on top was crisp & still sweet not bitter like I've had so many times before. Even though I had a smaller salad (caprese) than Shannon's chicken ceasar, I still couldn't finish my dessert. BTW Shannon's chicken ceasar was awesome, chicken was delicious. Her dessert was a house special & it was pretty damn good too!
Perfect ending to that first day!
DAY 1
I flew into the breezy LaGuardia Airport.

They Come & Go In 3s
So at the beginning of the week we lost Ed McMahon. Then all hell broke loose on Thursday. Yes, Farrah Fawcett & Michael Jackson both passed. This week will most definitely be one for the entertainment history books. I'm sure we're all looking forward to those "In Memoriam" montages at the Grammys & the Oscars.
Whe the news broke of Michael Jackson's death it eclipsed that of the other two losses in one fell swoop. The regular news media & social media was up in arms over the death of the King of Pop. I saw some get pretty ticked off that we were forgetting Ed & Farrah. Whilst I agree on some level that all three were significant losses, they were not all equal, with all due respect.
I venture to theorize that Ed McMahon & Farrah Fawcett were mainly American Icons. Yes, they had some international celebrity, but not on the level that Michael Jackson had. I don't seem to recall any international media footage of people in tears & passing out when Ed & Farrah walked by.
The medium of music in an of itself is highly emotional & extremely personal. It's the soundtrack of our lives as we so often hear. I had the great pleasure & opportunity to have two older brothers who embraced the early days of MTV as I was growing up. So I remember the night of Thriller's premiere. I remember Black or White's premiere too. You can imagine my shock & awe as I listened to a caller on a radio show who is only 2 years older than I am say he doesn't remember Michael in his heyday. He obviously meant the Jackson 5 days, right?!
That same caller said two generations will remember Michael differently: one for his music & iconography, the other for the controversy & scandal. He said with himself being in the younger generation he'd remember the troubles Michael faced. Please excuse me while I pick my jaw up from the floor. This man apparently grew up under a rock & has no cultural compass.
Truth is Michael Jackson is a world icon and his influence is wide-reaching, international. So it should not be a shock that he is receiving the lion's share of media this week, and let's face it throughout the rest of the year, most likely.
Don't get me wrong I grew up watching rerun episodes of Charlie's Angels & seeing Farrah Fawcett in The Burning Bed, like an after school special only for adults. I grew up watching The Tonight Show & Star Search every Saturday afternoon. All three played a good part in my childhood television watching habits.
I'm not diminishing the loss of Ed & Farrah. I'm just adding my two cents as to why the aftermath is playing out like it is & why people shouldn't be getting their panties in a twist because one is getting more attention than the others.
